What a one-day shower installation actually is
Advertising for showers installed in a single day is everywhere, and homeowners reasonably want to know whether it is real. It is real. It is also a narrower product than the advertising suggests, and understanding what makes a shower installable in one day tells you most of what you need to know about whether it is the right buy for your bathroom.

What makes a shower installable in a day
Speed in this category comes from three deliberate choices, and all three are trade-offs rather than tricks.
- A narrow choice set. A small range of sizes, colors and configurations means the parts are stocked, pre-cut and known. Nothing is measured, ordered and waited for.
- Working over the existing footprint. The drain and the valve stay where they are, so no plumbing is relocated and no floor is opened.
- A one-piece or few-piece surround. Fewer joints to make and seal means fewer hours, and it means the waterproofing is manufactured rather than built on site.
Those choices are what buys the day. They are also exactly what the day costs you: less choice, and a shower that fits the bathroom you already have rather than the one you might want.
When it is genuinely the right answer
A one-day system suits a household that wants a straightforward, clean, low-maintenance shower in place of a tub in a standard alcove, is happy inside a limited palette, and needs the bathroom back quickly. That describes a great many households, and for them it is a sensible purchase rather than a compromise.
It is a poor fit when the room is an unusual shape, when the layout should change, when the drain is in the wrong place, when the choice set does not contain a finish you can live with for twenty years, or when the reason for the project was accessibility and the pan on offer still has a step.
The thing to check, whoever you buy from
Ask what is behind the new surround. In this category the surround is sometimes fitted over the existing wall rather than in place of it, which is faster and is a genuinely different product from one that is removed and rebuilt. Neither is wrong. But if there is water damage behind the old wall, covering it is not the same as dealing with it, and you want to know which one you are buying before the day starts rather than after.
A liner is a third thing again. A bathtub liner or a shower liner is a molded shell fitted over the existing fixture, which stays where it is. It is the fastest and least expensive option in the category and it is not a conversion, because the tub is still in the wall. It is worth knowing which of the three you are being quoted for, since all three get described as a new shower.

We publish one to two days anyway, for a reason we would rather state than hide: the wall systems we sell include groutless stone composite and solid surface, and a properly set panel and a properly waterproofed pan often want the second day. We would rather quote the honest span and finish early than quote the best case and explain a second morning.

That breadth is the opposite of the thing that makes one-day installation possible, and it is a deliberate choice about what kind of company to be rather than an inability to move quickly.

A shower installed in a day by people who do it constantly, in a system engineered for it, can be excellent. A shower that took a week can be poor. What decides whether a shower lasts is the pan, the waterproofing and whether the walls behind it were sound, and none of those is measured in days.

What actually takes the second day?
Usually the wall system and the finishing rather than the demolition. Setting large panels properly, sealing the joints, fitting trim and doing the final clean is unhurried work, and a pan wants to be right before anything goes on top of it. A drain that has to move, or anything found behind the old wall, will also put the job into a second day, which is why the span is published rather than a single number.
Is a bathtub liner the same as a conversion?
No, and it is worth knowing which you are being quoted. A liner is a molded shell fitted over the existing fixture, which stays where it is. A one-day conversion typically removes the tub and fits a surround over the existing footprint. A full conversion removes the tub, the surround and the wall material behind it and rebuilds. All three get advertised as a new shower and they are three different products at three different prices.
