Ceramic and porcelain tile set in mortar and grout is the industry baseline shower-wall system: it follows published, non-proprietary ANSI A118.10 and TCNA Handbook methods, not one company's closed system. Porcelain absorbs 0.5% water or less. The category covers both glazed and through-body lines, and which one a tile is decides whether a chip shows a mismatched color underneath - ask per product, because no manufacturer document reviewed here settles it category-wide. IRC Table R702.4.2 names four approved backers for tub and shower walls: glass mat gypsum, fiber-reinforced gypsum, fiber-cement, and fiber mat-reinforced cementitious board. A bonded membrane meeting ANSI A118.10 can sit behind the board or go on topically right behind the tile, and TCNA leaves that pairing to each manufacturer to declare. The one-year warranty covers the tile only - installation is excluded and late claims are void.
What it does well
- Fired porcelain body absorbs 0.5% water or less, so the tile material itself resists moisture rather than relying on a surface coating to keep water out.
- The manufacturer's one-year defect warranty attaches no dealer-install or authorized-network condition - the material is warranted whoever sets it - unlike systems sold and warranted only through one company's installer network.
- Installation follows published, non-proprietary ANSI A118.10 and TCNA Handbook methods that any qualified tile setter can execute, rather than one company's closed system.
What it costs you
- Mold resistance at the grout joints is an upgrade the buyer has to specify: the maker certifies only its BioBlock-logo products per ASTM G21 as not supporting mold, mildew or fungal growth after installation, and states that common cleaning and maintenance practices are still needed regardless.
- TCNA EJ171 requires flexible sealant, not grout, at every inside corner and plane change; grout installed there cracks and pops out within months as the frame moves.
- The one-year manufacturer warranty covers the tile only: installation defects are excluded outright, consequential damage is not recoverable, and any claim not reported within 30 days of discovery is void.
Commonly mistaken for A printed or glazed decorative surface mistaken for color that runs through the tile - verify glazed vs. through-body/ColorBody-type construction per product before assuming a chip will not show a different color underneath.
