You do not have to let anyone into the house to find out what this costs. The step is the thing

A standard tub wall is about fifteen inches high. Lifting a leg over it twice a day is a task, and the point of this work is to take that task out of the day rather than to get better at it. Four of our six shower packages sit on a one-piece pan with a beveled front and no step at all — a walker or a wheelchair crosses it without anything being lifted — and the pan surface is slip-resistant rather than a mat laid on top of it.

A floor with no step is not simply a pan set lower. The subfloor is recessed so the finished floor can still fall at the slope the drain needs, which is what keeps water inside a shower that has no curb to hold it — our walk-in and curbless shower page explains that construction in more detail. That is also where a linear drain along one wall earns its keep: it lets the whole floor pitch in one direction instead of four, which is easier to cross and easier to look at. What comes with a conversion, and what you choose

Four of the five below are normally priced options: you add the ones you want in the Estimate Builder and see what each one adds before anyone visits. The scald-safe Delta valve and the shower head are in the package price on every conversion. Through September 30, 2026, a deposit placed by that date includes all four — the grab bars, the fold-down seat, the hand sprayer and the diverter — on any package at no extra cost.

• Grab bars. Anchored into the wall, not into drywall anchors, and available in the same finishes as the rest of the fittings so they read as a towel bar rather than as equipment.
• A fold-down seat. Blocked and anchored into the wall, and it folds flat when nobody is using it, so a shower with a seat in it is still a shower somebody can stand up in.
• A hand sprayer on a magnetic dock. The dock matters more than it sounds: the sprayer snaps back to it one-handed, with no aiming at a bracket and no reaching overhead to hang it up.
• A diverter. The small lever that sends the water to the hand sprayer instead of the shower head, so both are usable from a seated position without standing up to change anything.
• A scald-safe Delta valve and a shower head. The valve holds the temperature steady when a tap runs elsewhere in the house, so the water does not jump because somebody started the dishwasher.

It does not have to look clinical

This is the objection we hear most, and it usually comes from the person who will be using the shower rather than the person who suggested it. Nothing about a finished bathroom of ours announces why it was built that way. The bars match the fittings. The seat folds flat against the wall. The walls themselves are groutless panels in stone, solid-surface or acrylic finishes — thirteen colorways in one system, eighteen in another, twelve in another — and the no-step pan reads as a shower floor because that is all it is. The design brief is a bathroom that happens to be usable, not a bathroom about being usable.

Built to you, not to a commercial standard

The ADA is a standard for public accommodations — a store, an office, a restaurant — and it does not govern a private home. We would rather build to the person who is going to use the bathroom, which is a different exercise and usually a better one. What that means in practice is a short list of things we work out at the walkthrough and put in the written proposal:

• Where each bar goes, and which one you will actually pull on to stand up.
• Which wall the seat lands on and how high it sits, so the sprayer, the valve and the shelf are all inside reach from it.
• Whether a door or a curtain works better for a walker, and which way a door should swing if you want one.
• Whether the room has turning space, and what widening the entry would involve if it does not.
• Whether the valve should move so it can be reached from outside the spray, rather than under it.

None of those cost anything to discuss, and none of them are questions a website can answer for you. If an occupational therapist or a family member has given you dimensions to hit, bring them and we will build to them where the room allows.

What your house is like while we are in it

One named person is responsible for your project. Day-to-day questions go to the crew lead on site; anything about money, schedule or scope goes to the office in writing, so it never depends on somebody remembering a conversation. While the work runs there is taped rigid floor protection down the whole path rather than a drop cloth, a zippered dust-barrier wall at the bathroom door, HEPA air scrubbers running during demolition and tile work, covers over the registers so dust stays out of your ductwork, and a tidy site every night. The room gets at least two full professional cleanings before we hand it back.

Doing it early is the calm version

A good share of these bathrooms are built years before anyone needs them, by people who intend to stay in the house and would rather choose a shower on a Tuesday afternoon than choose one from a hospital discharge meeting. It is the same job either way, at the same price, on your schedule instead of somebody else's.
