What a conversion actually involves

Six things happen, roughly in this order, and all six are inside the price rather than added to it at the end.

• Demolition and haul-away. Floor protection and dust barriers go down first. Then the tub, the old surround and the old valve trim come out, and they leave in our truck — not to your curb.
• The plumbing. A conversion keeps the drain and the valve where they already are whenever the bathroom allows it, which is the single biggest reason it costs less than a full remodel. The tub spout goes away and a scald-safe Delta shower valve goes in. If your bathroom needs a drain or a valve relocated, that belongs in the written proposal rather than in a surprise on demolition day — which is what the photos you send us are for. • The shower pan. A low step-in pan, a one-piece pan with a beveled front you can walk or roll straight into with no step at all, or a hand-built tile floor laid level with the bathroom floor.
• The drain. Most conversions reuse the drain where it already sits, in the middle of the base. A no-step floor is made by recessing the subfloor so the tile can still fall at the required slope, and that is where a linear drain along one wall earns its keep — it lets the whole floor pitch one direction instead of four. • The wall system. Six of them, described below.
• The glass or the curtain. Two of the six packages arrive as a single carton with their own semi-frameless sliding door, so the door is already inside those. On the other four, a glass door is an upgrade over the curtain and rod.

A Delta scald-safe valve and a shower head are in every package. Grab bars, a fold-down seat, a hand sprayer on a magnetic dock and a diverter are priced options rather than part of the package price — each one starts off, and you add the ones you want and watch the number move as you do. Nothing is bundled in and quietly charged for. The six wall systems we build

A conversion is built around one of six shower packages, which differ in what the walls are made of, whether the pan has a step, and whether the door is already in the box. How long it takes

On site, a tub-to-shower conversion usually takes 1–2 days. That is how long your bathroom is out of use — days, not weeks. How soon we start is a separate number: once you approve your proposal, a conversion typically begins about 4–6 weeks later, and your itemized proposal carries a projected schedule before anything is torn out.

Who a conversion is for

The tub you never use

In most multi-bath homes there is one tub that gets cleaned and never filled. Converting it into a shower somebody uses every morning is the most requested bathroom change we are asked for, and the cheapest square footage in the house to improve, because the plumbing is already where it needs to be.

Getting in and out has become the problem

A standard tub wall is around fifteen inches, and stepping over it twice a day is a real obstacle for anyone managing balance, a hip, a knee or simple caution. Four of the six packages sit on a one-piece pan you can walk or roll straight into with no step at all. Grab bars, a fold-down seat and a hand sprayer are priced options you add on purpose rather than fittings that arrive by default, which is the honest way round: you are choosing them, not paying for them unasked.
