Why do online averages say a tub-to-shower conversion costs about $3,000?
Because they are measuring a different job, and it is worth understanding the difference before you compare quotes.
National cost aggregators pool everything filed under "tub to shower conversion." That bucket is dominated by the cheapest version of the work: a basic acrylic pan and wall kit dropped into the existing tub footprint, reusing the existing valve and drain, no grab bars, no seat, no waterproofing membrane, often no permit, and frequently no written warranty. - Moving plumbing. Relocating a drain or a valve means opening walls or floor, and it is the single biggest swing in most bathrooms.
- Tile instead of a solid-surface system. More labor, more time, more variables behind the wall.
- Bathroom size. A larger footprint is more material and more hours.
